So you aspire to write something about your graduation day, do you? Is the writer inside you tickling with anticipation for experiencing, recording and subsequently putting your brief encounter with fate into poetic words? Most writers understand that taking notes about one’s experiences is vital if one wants to be a good writer. This is because one tends of forget things over time, minor details start slipping slowly but surely. Sometimes you need to know exactly what was going through your mind, your heart at that particular moment to write a competent piece. Certainly, there are writers out there who can substitute their imagination for what they lack in actual evidence. However, not everyone functions that way. I myself prefer to know the minute details of what actually happened before I can put a spin of my own imagination on things. However, you cannot really take notes when you are sitting there huddled in your graduation gown and cap, listening for your name to be called, butterflies fluttering in your stomach. But, is we were to accept that situation and simply shrug our shoulders in defeat, we wouldn’t be writers would we?
No, there is always a way around. The way I would go about it is this: I would take notes up to the point until the entire class is called upon the stage to be seated. At this moment, I would work really hard to take mental notes of things. Of course, mental notes have the tendency of being temporary and their retention rate is quite low. However, with a little practice you can get better at making use of them. I would try not to be distracted by the graduation gowns and caps, by the thunderous applause for long enough to jot down my mental notes. Generally, students are given long and flowing academic gowns for graduation purposes. This could work to your advantage too. Slip in a small notebook and pen and if you find that must absolutely write something down, quietly slip your hands in your pockets, do your writing blind and then continue as if nothing has happened. Caps and gowns for high school graduations can thus work to your advantage, however, you don’t want to hide things inside your cap; that would be risking things too much. The next thing to do would be to write down as many things as you can as soon as you come out of the graduation. Excuse yourself, run to the bathroom or something and let your mental notes pour out of your mind and onto the little pages of your notepad. You will find some very interesting things in there and they will all be true. In this way, you will be using less imagination and more truth in your write-up. I think everybody would appreciate that more.
As you go about your business of becoming a successful writer, always keep this thing in mind. Taking notes will become a habit over time and not remain a chore if you keep it up.
